AASCIN American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses

Introduction
The American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses (AASCIN) was established in 1983 to promote education and research related to the nursing care of persons with spinal cord impairment (SCI).

The Research Program was established in 1984 to encourage nurses to conduct research. The intent is to develop a scientific body of knowledge related to SCI nursing practice, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of patient care.

The Model Projects Program was established in 1993 to evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs and delivery systems related to SCI, and to promote pilot demonstration projects for model programs and/or delivery systems related to SCI nursing.

Innovation and redesign of care delivery systems are pivotal in meeting the demands of changing health care systems.

These guidelines outline the format and criteria for proposal submissions. Proposals that fail to follow these guidelines will not be reviewed.

Eligible Applicants
The Principal Investigator (for research projects) or Project Director (for demonstration projects) must be a registered nurse. Other professionals may participate as co-investigator(s) or consultant(s). Membership in AASCIN is not required. Funding is limited to projects conducted in facilities located in the United States or Canada.

Members of the AASCIN Research Committee may not apply for grant
funds, nor be part of a proposal team during their tenure on the Committee.

Submission Deadline
The Research Committee reviews proposals once per year. Proposals must be postmarked by December 1. Proposals postmarked after this date will not be reviewed.

Funding
AASCIN Research and Model Demonstration Project grants are for a period of 1 year. The grants are intended to support small scale, pilot studies or to initiate innovative clinical demonstration projects. It is hoped that the successful initial studies and projects will lead to application for larger-scale projects funded through private foundations and public agencies, such as the Spinal Cord Research Foundation of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the American Paralysis Association, the National Institutes of Health, or Research and Development Programs of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

AASCIN does not fund projects designed for the production of material for which the Investigator/Project Director intends to apply for a copyright or a patent, or use for commercial purposes.

Total funding available for Research and Model Demonstration Projects is $75,000/year. Grant awards generally range from $2,000 to $20,000.

Review Process
Each proposal is initially reviewed by the Research Committee to ensure compliance with guidelines and procedures. A preliminary review by the Research Committee evaluates
scientific merit and appropriateness of design. Suitable proposals are forwarded to a second level of review by independent peer reviewers. The final determination of funding is made by the Research Committee.

Applicants will be notified of funding decisions by June 1. The funding cycle begins July 1.

Submission Requirements
One original proposal plus 14 copies must be submitted to the AASCIN office. Materials not collated and secured as an integral part of the proposal will not be reviewed.

The proposal must have the AASCIN Grant Application Form attached as a cover sheet to the original proposal and all copies.

The Investigator must provide signed documentation from the applicant institution supporting submission of the proposal. If more than one institution is involved, support is required from all collaborating institutions.

The proposal must include approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or its equivalent, or verification of submission for IRB approval from participating organizations. Funding is dependent upon IRB approval.

Studies that involve human subjects must ensure that informed consent is obtained. A copy of the consent form must accompany the application. Approval of the Human Subjects Committee, or a statement that adequate protection of the rights of human subjects will be observed, must be obtained from the institution(s) at which human subjects will be used and included in the proposal.
